Estimated 35 arrested during peaceful protests in St. Petersburg
Several groups of peaceful participants gathered in unauthorized protests on Sennaya Square in St. Petersburg late in the evening of April 21, 2021.
Demonstrations were reported across Russia on with rallies in the major cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg attracting the highest number of attendees, despite a current ban on protests in Russia. Press reports estimated over 1000 people arrested nationwide.
An uncoordinated action in support of Alexei Navalny started in the Alexander Garden. The participants were divided into several groups, the central streets were blocked.
The protesters occupied Gorokhovaya, Griboyedov Canal, Voznesensky and Admiralteisky avenues, Kazanskaya street. Parts of the embankment of the Griboyedov and Moika canal were reportedly painted black.
The crowd size was not unusual for commuter times, but the entrance to the Sennaya Ploschad metro station was blocked in the evening. Sennaya Square has three metro stations, Sennaya, Sadovaya and Spasskaya.
