Why are Moscow streets so clean?

If you have visited Moscow or St. Petersburg, Russia you may have noticed how clean the streets seem compared to most European and American cities.

Downtown Moscow near Red Square. Clean streets everywhere.

There are several reasons for this. First, the government hires a large number of workers who walk the streets in the mornings cleaning, sweeping and picking up trash. But it doesn’t stop there.

City crews also fight dust with regular water spraying trucks. Powerful jets wash across the pavement settling dust and pushing it to the gutters.

Eleven water spraying trucks congregated for a few moments upon this downtown intersection.

And to top it off, regular street sweeping vehicles circulate picking up larger litter and dirt.
