Museum of Russian Valenki
« on: February 07, 2010, 08:04:30 AM »
Felt boots might seem a strange theme for a museum, but the display in this overflowing room in the smart red brick building of the Gorizont Factory, does a good job of justifying its importance. Key figures in Russian history have worn valenki, from Peter the Great to Leo Tolstoy, Vladimir Lenin and General Panfilov. There are also dozens of brightly decorated examples showing the versatility of the medium, from punk graffiti and safety pins to lace, silk flowers and embroidery.
The most interesting section of the exhibit is the corner by the wool-carding machine, where the English-speaking guide can show you the process of felting and how a metre-high boot-shaped piece of wool shrinks down into a tough felt boot.
The museum is open 11 am- 5:30 pm and closed on Sunday, Monday and Thursday. Put 50 roubles ($2) into the felt boot by the door on your way out.
You can visit the factory shop next door, which sells a variety of blankets, hats, slippers jackets, and - of course - boots. The steady stream of visitors in this factory outlet suggests the prices are good.

There is nothing more Russian than valenki. To preserve valenki means to preserve Russian culture

Valenki are getting loved by the special part of citizens, and designers and modelliers they constitute a real object of creativity. The results of artist's imagination can also be found in the museum.

A unique museum "Russian Valenki", opened not too long ago, in December, 2001. Over the course of time, the museum has gained popularity with tourists wishing to know more about Russian culture.
Of course, a valenki museum in Moscow also sells valenki. Some boutiques may sell designer valenki but it is  different.
Address is  Kozhevnicheskiy pereulok, 12th.
Museum Russian Valenki is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday from 11 am to 5:30 pm.
Tickets - 50 rubles

Valenki – is a very nice, simple, very Russian.

Russian way of living, Russian winter and even Russian character.
”As simple as valenok” is a well used frase in Russian culture.
“If not by washing then by rolling” – these are the sayings of Russian culture. And nobody needs explanations what they mean: valenki are as simple as Russian man are, but they are at the same time resistant, basic and reliable, they will not let you down in hard times!

The museum exhibition includes a large collection of different models of felt boots, ranging from embroidered items of the end of the last century to those worn by our sportsmen during the Olympic Games and some creations by modern designers as well.
