Every year after a three summer vacation on the 1st of September pupils go to their schools to continue their jorney to the Island of Knowlegde. While growing up they establish the depths of wisdom to enter the adult life with knowedge. On this day the doors of colleges, lyceums, technikums, institutes, universities are also open.
The first day of school is a day that, all across Russia, celebrates teachers and the value placed on education. It is considered to give your child’s teacher a gift: flowers (the most popular), candy, books, school supplies.

All general Russian study and different courses begin on the 1st of September and last through to the end of December (Fall semester). The Spring semester begins on the 7th of February and lasts through to the end of May.

It is a very important day for all the students in Russia. It is the day when the school year traditionally starts in Russia and many other former USSR republics. It has special significance for the incoming class of 1st graders who will come to school for the first time. Students in other grades may begin studies on 1st of September or a few days later, usually without any special festivities. Students bring bouquets of flowers to their teachers, books, sweets and very often students go to cinemas.
