August 22: Day of Russian Flag
« on: August 23, 2009, 03:35:23 PM »
The anniversary of August 22, 1994 when the White-Blue-Red flag was raised over a new democratic Russia.

It marked the end of The red hammer and sickle flag,
The white-blue-red flag was used in Russia in 1667 during the reign of Alexei Mikhailovich.

Tri-color stripes were the mark of the first Russian ship "Eagle".  Peter the Great  approved the state symbol. In 1705 he determined the order of stripes and ordered to use the flag for Russia's trading ships.

There is no official meaning assigned to the three stripes but the flag has an interesting history briefly recounted on at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Russia

August 22: 2010 Day of Russian Flag - Arrests and celebrations
« Reply #1 on: August 24, 2010, 01:32:51 AM »
Russia is celebrated National Flag Day. Almost 1,000 people gathered in the center of Moscow at noon to sing the Russian anthem.
Organizers handed out a large number of flags and white, blue and red balloons to be released.
Flag Day has been an annual celebration since 1994.

Arrests in Moscow after flying the flag on Flag Day

Arresting a man for displaying his country’s flag in the capital city on the national flag day sounds like the punchline of a bad joke – but it’s exactly what happened to a group of opposition politicians yesterday.

To mark Aug. 22, the anniversary of the day Russia’s tricolor flew over the White House for the first time in 1991, Boris Nemtsov and supporters wanted to march down Novy Arbat with a giant Russian flag.

After his arrest Nemtsov told Interfax: “We, like any patriots of Russia, wanted to express our respects to the country and the flag on National Flag day.

“We decided to carry the flag along the pavements, without interfering with anyone.

“But the police pounced on us and did not allow us to do it.”
