Scarlet Sails day - АЛЫЕ ПАРУСА
last day to study for schools. Sometimes called Crimson Sails day, but more properly Scarlet Sails..

All students celebrate and go out to see the big tall sailing ship Standardt with scarlet color sails on the Neva river.
It is a St. Petersburg holiday but even people from Moscow often come to see it!
So spectacular event it is!

Scarlet Sails is the name of a story by Alexander Grin published while he lived in St. Petersburg in 1922.

It is the story of a young girl, Assol, who never gives up on her dreams and they finally arrive on the ship with the scarlet sails. And so it is inspiration for all young people to never give up on their dreams and upon graduation  seek  their scarlet sails in life.

The Scarlet Sails  celebration in St. Petersburg has spectacular fireworks launched from Peter and Paul Fortress.

Scarlet Sails is touted as the largest holiday event in Russia with an estimated attendance of one million people comprised of students, military cadets, teachers and families.

The Scarlet Sails tradition began after World War II when several Leningrad (Now St. Petersburg) schools united to celebrate the end of the school year with symbolism from Alexander Grin's  popular children’s book, “Scarlet Sails.” At that time, a boat with scarlet sails would float along the Neva River's English and Admiralty Embankments, heading toward the Winter Palace. The celebration gained much popularity following the release of the 1961 movie titled “Alye Parusa.”

The Scarlet Sails celebration includes large-scale events on the Neva River, such as rowing and motorboat races and massive pirate battles. Appearing at the finale is a tall ship sporting scarlet sails.
The city's fountains with their colored lights make a spectacular backdrop to the music and fireworks.
The St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra and popular stars often provide live concerts during the event.

It is about eternal hope that will never leave peoples hearts.
Filmed in Kronschtadt, a famous historical place during the 1917 revolution.
The central point of the film is the conflict between two generations with a happy ending.

Every summer in St. Petersburg in June is the huge graduation celebration of the Scarlet Sails. Alye Parusa!
It is one of the happiest celebrations in St. Petersburg.  It starts in the afternoon and goes long after midnight when the red sails are seen on the Neva river.

Here is how channel 5 covers the crimson sails along the Neva in St. Petersburg. Thousands walk to the river along Nevsky Prospect. It is closed for traffic and people fill Palace Square and line the waterfront and bridges to meet with  friends, teachers and schoolmates and enjoy the scarlet sails.

There is often confusion with translations regarding Scarlet Sails and Alexander Grin.

Alye Parusa, алые паруса. Bright red sails!
A Russian-English dictionary will suggest  "alye" алые to scarlet or crimson in English.
However, if you translate "Crimson Sails" to Russian you will find "Raspberry Sails" and Scarlet Sails will translate correctly to Alye Parusa, алые паруса, the bright red sails.

The Alye color refers to the bright red silk used by the toymaker in Alexander grin's book. Scarlet is the best english word for the bright red color. Crimson means a cool red towards the burgundy color, scarlet a warm red towards orange.

Regarding the name of the author Alexander Grin, some references in English are erroneously to Alexander Green or Greene. This is not correct.
He was born Alexander Grinevsky and shortened it in 1906 as his pseudonym to Grin. Phonetically, it is pronounced close to the word "green" in English, but it is written "Grin" in English with a short "I" sound.

Don't forget it is Scarlet Sails by Alexander Grin!

Alye Parusa or Scarlet Sails has been read for generations in Russia, first published in 1922 when Alexander Grin lived in St. Petersburg.
