Cigarette smoking in Russia among the highest rates

According to a recent global study of tobacco smoking in Russia, almost half the adult population smokes cigarettes. The average adult smoker in Russia smokes 17 cigarettes per day.

Adult smokers in Russia number nearly 44 million people.
The habit of smoking is about 60% men and women - 21% of women.

. Russia conducted the study under the project GATS (Global Adult Tobacco Survey - Global survey of adults about tobacco use), which is being implemented with support from the World Health Association (WHO) since 2007 in the countries where the population lives more than half of all smokers worldwide.

Passive smoking

 The study takes into account the GATS is also evidence of the so-called passive smoking.
It turned out that in Russia, almost 35% of non-smokers exposed to tobacco smoke at work - from smoking colleagues.

Despite bans on smoking in public places in St. Petersburg, the problem persists.
 In the Russian bars and restaurants have to inhale tobacco smoke, according to the poll, 90% of visitors.

Just last year, according to Minister of Health and Social Development Tatyana Golikova, the total cost of Russians on cigarettes amounted to nearly 1% of GDP.

Time to get tougher
