New Year's Eve is the big holiday in Russia. On many squares are decorated trees and concerts.
On Palace square is live music and festivities. It is very happy and festive early in the evening, but you have to step over trash and debris as the night wears on and risk rowdy drunks.
Recommendation: go early and leave early.
