Fyodor Dostoyevsky was born Nov. 11, 1821  (October 30, 1821 in old  calendar)

Dostoevsky is considered to be one of the most important Russian novelists and one of the first novelists to explore the ideas of psychoanalysis in his writing. He is widely read and studied today for his investigation of morality, religion and existential subjects remains relevant today.

Russia Day continues to be the day to commemorate the start of modern Russia celebrated across the country on June 12.

Although the birthday of St. Petersburg is officially May 27, in 2014 it will be celebrated Sunday May 25 so more people can attend the festivities.

Hermitage Museum / Hermiitage Festival of Cats

Day of the Hermitage Cats!  May 24, 2014

Deep inside the lower levels of the State Hermitage Museum are a special and elite unit of guards -- the Hermitage Cats!

Cats make sure that no mice or rats damage the huge collections in the 300 year old building should they find their way inside/

Visitors may walk through the dungeons of the Hermitage, where they can be personally acquainted with the furry guards of the museum.
The festival is dedicated to the Hermitage cats and certainly will please animal lovers.
A unique opportunity to visit the cellars of the main museum in St. Petersburg that does not come often.

See where the cats live and explore parts of the museum most people have never seen before. Also, you can visit the exhibition of works by students and creative projects of students of the Youth Center of the State Hermitage.

Starts at noon.
300 rubles (at the regular rates for the ticket)
