Title: Belgorod's bans Valentine's Day

"Society has to think about the consequences of St Valentine's Day celebrations."

Belgorod's governor said the holiday was being targeted because it goes against Russian cultural traditions. Halloween has also been banned.

Mr Bolotnov said the holiday was organized to benefit commercial organizations.

"We could just as well have introduced a Vodka Day."

Belgorod has replaced Valentine's Day with a day of Orthodox youth, which is marked with a classical music concert and a ball.

The influential Russian-Orthodox Church has no clear position on Valentine's Day but the ban reportedly has the blessing of the local archbishop.
