Title: Some common words that sound similar in Russian and English
Post by: Sennaya on August 19, 2009, 04:39:56 PM
Let me start of with some useful English words that sound similar in Russian.

‘airport’ becomes ‘aeroport,’  (with a rolled 'r' sound)
‘taxi’  stresses the second syllable ‘tak-SEE,’
‘bank’ remains ‘bahnk’
'hotel' is understood and is pronounced ‘o-tel’
but the Russian word for hotel is  ‘gos-teen-eetsa’
‘toilet’ sounds like ‘too-al-yet’

So, they are not only sounds similar but meen the same.

The rus word 'gosteeneetsa' reminded me:
- eng 'ghost' is rus 'preeveedenie'
but
-eng 'ghost' sounds like rus 'ghost' ' with soft t' in the end.
and is eng 'guest'

So, there are many ghosts in Russian gosteenetsas

hehe
Thats how you can remember the words easy. woohoooo

While it is true that the Russian language has borrowed many technological and business terms from English, the main reason for similarities between English and Russian is that  the origin of most European languages are from shared Greek and Latin roots.
