News and Travel in Russia / Cheburashka goes to the zoo!
« Last post by Sennaya on April 20, 2015, 06:17:44 PM »

"Cheburashka Goes to the Zoo," is a new stop-motion animation featuring Cheburashka,  one of Russia's most beloved characters, and will be showing in 500 movie venues across Japan from this Fall 2015.
This first Cheburashka film in five years, Japanese director Makoto Nakamura  marks the 50th anniversary next year of Cheburashka's birth in 2016.

Cheburashka was originally created by Russian children's book writer Eduard Uspensky in 1966. The mysterious creature with large, round ears was introduced in "Gena the Crocodile" as the reptile's friend. But Cheburashka became so popular that it became the protagonist.

The first stop-motion animation was produced in 1969, and the character became popular worldwide. Cheburashka also featured in an animated TV series in Japan in 2009. A stop-motion puppet short film directed by Nakamura was released in 2010.

Following in the footsteps of the original works from Russia, "Cheburashka Goes to the Zoo" was created with stop-motion techniques using puppets and sets. The latest piece, lasting 15 minutes, has been invited for screening at the International Animated Films Festival KROK in Russia, the Zlin Film Festival in the Czech Republic and the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen in Germany.

In Japan, the short was first showcased at a special screening event held March 8 in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, to pay tribute to victims of the tsunami disaster four years ago. Cheburashka served as the mascot for the event.

The world's strongest girl, 15-year-old Russian Mariana Naumova, told Arnold Schwarzenegger she hoped he would become the President of the United States and fix relations with Russia, according to Argumenty i Fakty newspaper.
Naumova met Schwarzenegger at the annual Arnold Sports Festival held last week in Columbus, Ohio. The Russian schoolgirl set a new world record by bench pressing 150 kilograms and was congratulated by the former California governor in person.
Schwarzenegger reportedly said he would "work on" fulfilling Naumova's request.

"On the record I was congratulated by himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and we were able to talk a little. I told him my dream that he become president of the United States and improve relations with Russia... Arnold carefully listened to me and promised me that he would work on it ... "- said Marian.

Events, Holidays and Festivals / February 23, 2015: Defenders of Russia Day
« Last post by Sennaya on February 23, 2015, 07:28:48 PM »
Official holiday celebrates people who are serving or were serving the Russian Armed Forces (both men and women), but unofficially, nationally it has also more recently come to include the celebration of men as a whole, and to act as a counterpart of International Women's Day on March 8.

Expect parades and processions in honor of veterans, and women also give small gifts to the Russian men in their lives, especially husbands (or boyfriends), fathers, sons and brothers. As a part of the workplace culture, women often give gifts to their male co-workers. Consequently, in colloquial usage, the holiday is often referred to as Men's Day (Russian: День Мужчин, Den' Muzhchin).

A balalaika on the Sennaya Ploschad Metro escalator! Not the usual scene on the escalator, but harkens to another time.
